Research, technology and education at IICT-BAS

The Institute of Information and Communication Technologies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IICT-BAS) was founded on 1 July 2010 as the successor of the Institute for Parallel Processing (IPP), the Institute of Information Technologies (IIT) and the Institute of Computer and Communication Systems (ICCS).

The Department of Communication and Computer Systems is the successor of the Department “Communication Systems and Services” of IICT-BAS, formed by the former departments “Integrated Systems for Digital Data Processing” and “Dependable Computing and Communication Systems” of ICCS-BAS, and the department “Mechatronic Sensory Systems” of CLMI-BAS (Central Laboratory of Mechatronics and Instrumentation).

Research directions

Sensor information systems

Sensor data acquisition, information processing and process control, sensor-information systems, connection of distributed systems with microprocessor controllers. The focus is on the relation between wireless sensor networks and conventional systems, on the ZigBee technology for control of swarms of mobile devices, on SMART METERING applications and on the integration of wireless solutions into industrial applications and process control.

Technology enhanced learning (eLearning)

Approaches to learner modelling, adaptable and adaptive e-learning environments, instruments for development and reuse of educational materials, collaboration of partners in the teaching–learning process, learning technologies and educational e-games. The focus is on personalized learning facilities for pupils with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia and autism.

Dependable, secure and resilient computer systems and networks

Modelling of fault-tolerant systems and networks, simulation models of real-time control systems, quality of service of communication networks. Recent efforts target information security and the resilience concept — future and emerging threats, vulnerability reduction, protection of networks against attacks (e.g. in wireless sensor networks), self-healing and adaptation of control systems in open network environments.

Compression, processing, recognition and security of digital visual information

Lossless compression of grey level and colour digital images, methods for covert communications based on digital carrier images, digital watermarks for authentication and integrity verification of multimedia documents, authentication of multimedia documents by means of biometrical watermarks.
